Enter Windows Mobile 5.0!
With the release of Windows Mobile 5.0 devices, you now have a much better selection of devices and an operating system that benefits from bug fixes and navigational improvements. Here's a summary of some of the Pros and Cons for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices.
Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphones, PocketPC PDAs:
Pros:
- Nice integration with Outlook - Contacts, Calendar records carry complete information including notes, reminders and links
- Good Internet and media features
- Navigation is much easier in 5.0
- Easy personal and/or Exchange based synchronization using ActiveSync
- Exchange ActiveSync is included with Exchange 2003. No additional costs to implement
- Supports multiple synchronization sessions for office and home
- BlueTooth synchronization
Cons:
- Requires additional cost Internet/Media plan from mobile carrier - up to $29.99 for unlimited downloads
- Most Smartphones do not offer thumb key pad - No touch screen on SmartPhones
- Smartphones and Pocket PC PDA Phones are generally more expensive than RIM BlackBerry's
- Smartphones require additional software required for viewing/editing Office documents.
- Earlier versions of Windows Mobile are not as robust as Windows Mobile 5.0 - do not purchase devices with Windows Mobile 2003.
- No scroll wheel on PDAs
- Industry standard
- Easy learning curve and good interface - scrolling wheel
- Entry level BlackBerry devices are reasonably priced
- Over-the-Air client based synchronization is available with included software - personal computer must be on and connected to the Internet
- Perfect for quick reading and responding to email
Cons:
- Server based synchronization requires BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Small Business (approx $1500.00)
- Implementation requires support from a trained professional
- Pending court decisions may require software upgrade - should be available at no charge but will require installation and setup
